If
you have a small business, it is very likely that your website is
under-performing. Let a professional marketer review it for
you.
From the
desk of Jonathan Hook, Marketing Consultant
Dear Small Business
Owner,
You run a
small business. You
know you
need a website - but you
don't know what to do with it or how to use
it to grow your business.
Many
businesses have a website but they
don't know what to do with it. Others may not even have a website.
Unfortunately, many business owners don't invest properly into their
website because they
don't understand why they need it or how they
can benefit from it.
My name is Jonathan Hook and I
am one of the "Go-To Marketing Guys". I have studied direct
response marketing for quite some time and also have a unique
combination of experiences. I have had my own small business
for the past 17 years and also have experience as a web designer and a
marketing consultant. This puts me in a unique position to be
able to help you understand how your website can be used as a marketing
tool for your offline business.
Your small business website
should be an
important part of your marketing program. It could very easily be
the first point of
contact that a customer has with your business. What
is their first impression of you?
As
a small business owner, you are likely familiar with email, you have
likely spent time online and searched for things yourself.
Maybe
you have ordered a product from another site, maybe you have got some
information that you found usefull. Maybe that is the extent
of
your experience online.
Did
you know that you can be using the power of the Internet to grow your
own business?
Now
just wait, I know what you are thinking...
"I don't know how to build a
website"
"I
don't have time to learn any of that stuff, I can hardly keep up with
my staff, my inventory, my equipment, who is going to take care of all
the website stuff?"
I
am not
suggesting that you take courses and put your life on hold while you go
out and learn how to build a website. All that stuff can be
hired
out, you don't need to
sweat it. Put the mechanics of how to
do
it out of your head for a couple of minutes and let's focus on why...
Let's
take a look at your sales system and how the Internet (specifically
your own website) can be used to grow your own brick and mortar offline
business.
It
is a simple fact
that more and more people are going online every day.
The Internet has become a way of life. People go
online for
business, entertainment, shopping, travel, research, news and a number
of other reasons.
Some
people
now search for things online before
even going to the yellow pages.
Do you know what that means? It means that if they
go
online and do a search and your business does not come up in their
favourite search engine or portal, your business does not exist to
them. You are
invisible and they will not purchase from you.
This is the harsh reality.
Did
you also know that your customers will judge the quality of your
company by what they see on your website? If someone comes to
your
site and sees an amateur, one page site that hasn't been updated in two
years, what are they
going to think of your business?
Does that mean you need to spend
thousands of dollars getting some fancy site built?
Absolutely
not!
In fact, many
fancy, expensive
websites don't make the owner any money at all! More on that
in a minute...

What
it means is that you need to understand why you have a website and how
to use it in your business.
Your
website should serve a
purpose other than just sitting idle on a hard
drive some place.
I
don't care whether you spend $50 or $50,000 on your website.
If
it doesn't serve a specific
purpose, it is a waste!
Your website can be used to:
Educate
your customers on who you are and what you offer
Obtain
information from your customers in the form of a survey or questionnaire
Provide
support on products you sell or manufacture
Sell
a product or service
Generate
leads with
whom you can follow up
The purpose of your website
will depend on the nature of your business and the goals you have for
it.
The
point is that you need to know why you have the site and it should have
some sort of a call to action - a simple invitation to follow the next
step in your sales process.
One way of using your
website in
your sales process is what we call the "two step" method and is one of
my favourite uses for a website...
Have you ever
spent money on
advertising? I bet you have. Here is what has been
my own
experience (ya, I have had a "real" offline business for more than 17
years. I know where you are at) you go out and spend some
money
on an ad. But ads
are expensive. You put an ad in
the
yellow pages of your local phone book or you buy some space in the
local newspaper thinking you are going to get people flocking to your
business. The problem is that you have a budget and it only
buys
you so much space. You can only say a fraction of what you
want to
say in that space and so the ad fails to get the results you had hoped
for. OK, now what if instead, you just took enough
room
out to
send people to your
website for more information?
All
your ad
has to do is get them to check out your website. One step
should
lead to the next in a natural progression. The beauty of this
is
that you can buy less ad space (read, "spend less money") upfront and
then send people to your website where you can use all manner of tools
(audio, video, pictures, colours, etc) to sell them or invite them
into your store. This let's you paint a much better
picture
of your business than you can do in just one tiny ad - and the person
still
hasn't left the comfort of their
living room!
Ok,
maybe I am
getting a bit ahead of myself here. Maybe you are someone who
has
paid a designer for a site that just isn't producing results (it
happens all the time), maybe you just have a small webpage up that
really doesn't portray the extent of your business and it really isn't
making you any money. The problem with most website designers
is that they are technicians - they know how to build a website.
They can make it attractive and add features. But, they are not marketers.
They don't understand how to design a sales process that
leads customers to your door. Do not confuse
someone who can build a website with someone who can design a sales
campaign.
The first step is to take a
good look at
your website and review the goals you have for it. Are you
using
it to close sales, generate leads, support your products or give
visitors a better picture of your business?
I can
help you do just that!
All
you have to do is fill out the form on the next page and I will
personally do an in-depth video
analysis of your website - from a marketer's
view point.
I will review your site and send you back some suggestions
that
you can take and implement for immediate results!
Here
are just some of the things I will look at:
What is the overall user
experience
What information is displayed on
the site? Is something missing?
Does the website have a purpose?
Is it obvious?
Is it achieving it's goal?
Current with updates?
Are you collecting leads in
order to follow up? (This one item alone could transform your entire
business)
Does it have a good
headline to draw the reader in?
Is there opportunity for
expansion/improvement/growth?
Is
your site optimised for the Search Engines so people can find you?
Does
your company have a Unique Selling Proposition - is it on your website?
When
I am done and send you my report, you will have a much better
understanding of how you can be using your website
to make more money for your small business.
You
will receive a video of me going through your website and giving you a
complete analysis of it from a direct marketer's point of
view.
